Christmas Bird Count: Antigua 2010

The second CBC Antigua Guatemala was carried out on 18 December 2010. A total of 16 observers in four groups counted birds in Finca Filadelfia, in Finca El Pilar, at Cerro Alux, and at Agua volcano. Weather conditions were favorable with no clouds and no or little wind.

A total of 941 birds of 117 species was detected. In addition, two more species were recorded during the count week. The most abundant birds with at least 20 detected individuals were (in descending order of abundance): Pacific Parakeet, Vaux's Swift, Wilson's Warbler, Bushy-crested Jay, Gray Silky-flycatcher, Townsend's Warbler, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Black-capped Swallow, Rufous-collared Robin, Band-tailed Pigeon, Brown-backed Solitaire, and Tennessee Warbler.

Noteworthy were records of Unspotted Saw-whet Owl, which represent new site records for Guatemala. Several range-restricted bird species of the north Central American highlands were recorded during the CBC, including Rufous Sabrewing, Green-throated Mountain-gem, Wine-throated Hummingbird, Blue-throated Motmot, Bushy-crested and Black-throated Jay, Black-capped Swallow, Rufous-browed Wren, Rufous-collared Robin, and Blue-and-white Mockingbird.

Antigua is part of the Antigua Guatemala Important Bird Area (IBA GT016) and this Christmas Bird Count helps to monitor bird populations in this IBA.
